Idaho Steelheads News Release
Bakersfield, CA - Kellen Briggs stopped a career-high, 44 shots as the Steelheads bested the Condors 2-1 in a shootout on Friday night from Rabobank Arena.
The win helped the Steelheads (16-11-7) improve to 3-3 in shootouts this season and 4-2-0 on their current road trip, while the Condors (8-17-6) drop to 3-6-4 at home.
Newcomer Bill Kinkel gave the Steelheads a 1-0 lead at 8:12 of the first period, sweeping home a rebound off Blake Forsyth's right point shot for his first goal of the season. Craig Cescon added the second assist on the even-strength marker, his first professional point.
Just 1:23 later Steven Later answered for the Condors, skating into the Steelheads' zone along the left wing side before beating Briggs over his glove for his fifth goal of the season. Defenseman Kevin Truelson and winger Andrew Ianiero registered the helpers.
There was no scoring in the second period and through 40 minutes the shots favored the Condors 30-20.
After a scoreless third period and a deadlocked overtime, it was on to a shootout where Jeremy Scherlinck and Taggart Desmet scored for the Steelheads and only Matt Craig was stopped. Briggs denied Later, Griffith, Venedam and Konsorada to cement his eighth win. The shootout defeat drops Yutaka Fukufuji to 7-7-1 on the season. The final shots favored the Condors 45-31, with the two teams going without a tally in just seven combined power plays.
The Steelheads conclude their seven-game road trip with an afternoon affair against the Condors on Saturday, January 5. The puck drops at 1:00 p.m. MST. All the action can be heard live on 1350 AM, KTIK "The Ticket" or via the B2 Networks. Don't forget, Steelheads' single-game tickets can be purchased via www.idahosteelheads.com (using the print-at-home feature), by calling 331-TIXS or from the Qwest Arena box office.
