South Carolina Stingrays News Release
Estero, FL - South Carolina opened up a seven game road trip with a tilt against the Florida Everblades at Germain Arena. The South Carolina Stingrays got goals from Cail MacLean Trent Campbell and Nate Kiser but it wasn't enough as Florida scored five unanswered goals to put this one away.
"It was tough when you are skating so few guys against a full compliment of players," said Head Coach Jared Bednar. "But the guys played hard. I have no problem with the way the guys played out there tonight."
In the first period the Rays struck first as MacLean got his eighth goal of the year from Travis Morin at 9:55 to take the lead. After the Everblades tied it up, Campbell scored to make it 2-1, on a pass from Morin on the power play. The goal came at 17:41 and was Campbell's fifth on the year. The other assist went to Mike Gabinet.
South Carolina extended their lead to two goals when Nate Kiser scored a power play goal of his own in the second period to make it 3-1. Kiser's goal, his second on the year, was assisted by Pierre-Luc O'Brien and Campbell at 0:36. But back to back goals by Preston Callander tied the game up at three before the second period came to a close.
The third period began much the same as the second period ended, with Callander getting a goal, his his third of the night. Two more goals by the Everblades salted this one away, as Florida walked away with the 6-3 victory.
The winning goaltender was David Shantz who stopped 24 of 27 shots. The losing goaltender was Josh Johnson who stopped 33 of the 39 shots he faced. The Rays went two for seven on the power play, while killing off four of the six short handed opportunities they faced.
"With only 15 guys on the bench, it's always going to be a tough game," said Bednar. "But there is no doubt that we are a better team after this loss. The guys showed me a lot tonight. I'm very proud of them."
The Stingrays are back in action tomorrow night when they once again take on the Everblades. Game time will be at 7:30.
