Victoria Salmon Kings News Release

The Victoria Salmon Kings played their first game of 2008 this evening as they hosted the Utah Grizzlies for game one of a three game set. The Kings entered tonight's matchup sitting atop the National Conference and 11 points ahead of the Grizzlies who currently hold onto fourth place in the West.

The Kings opened the scoring midway through the opening frame as Ash Goldie notched his league leading 12th power play marker of the season as he was left all alone in front of the net. Jordan Krestanovich and Dylan Yeo drew the assists on the play.

The Kings had some great scoring chances late in the period, but Grizzlies' goaltender Nathan Lawson was up to the task making some big saves to keep Utah's deficit to just one goal after 20 minutes.

The Grizzles wasted no time in tying up the game as Olivier Labelle snuck a power play marker past Kings' goalie Julien Ellis at the 1:15 mark of the second frame. Scott Burt picked up the lone assist on the goal.

The Salmon Kings restored their one goal lead midway through the period when Derek Krestanovich fired a nice pass over to Chris St. Jacques who made no mistake chipping home his fourth goal of the season.

Captain Kiel McLeod added to the Kings' lead at the 14:03 mark when he ripped his seventh goal of the season over the shoulder of Lawson from the top of the circle. Assisting on the play was Ryan Wade and Paul Ballantyne. Wade's assist increased his point streak to eight games where the veteran forward has notched three goals and nine assists. McLeod's marker gave the Kings' a 3-1 lead after two periods of play.

The Salmon Kings kept the pedal down into the third period as McLeod scored his second goal of the night just over three minutes into the frame. Ash Goldie notched his second goal of the night and 22nd of the year at the 14:07 mark to help the Kings cruise to a 5-1 victory and sent the crowd of 4,338 home happy.

The Kings fired 34 shots on net and went 1/7 (14.3%) on the power play while the Grizzlies took 34 shots on Ellis and went 1/9 (11.1%) with the man advantage. The second game of the three game set goes Saturday night in Victoria at 7:05 pm. For tickets call 220-7889
