LAST TIME VERSUS PENGUINS:
Tonight's game is the back-half of a home-and-home between Hershey and Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. Last night, the Chocolate and White suffered a 4-1 setback to the Penguins at Mohegan Sun Arena. Adam Johnson had a three point night for the Penguins, including scoring twice in the second period. Hershey's lone goal came from Liam O'Brien in the third period. The loss ended Hershey's three-game point streak. Vitek Vanecek, the CCM/AHL Player of the Week made his fourth straight start in goal, stopping 24 shots in the loss.
LIAM LIGHTS IT UP:
Hershey forward Liam O'Brien scored his team-leading fifth goal of the season last night in the loss at Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. O'Brien has a goal in each of his past two games, and has struck in four of the past five contests. Only six players in the AHL have more goals than O'Brien. This marks the best start to a season of O'Brien's professional career. Last season O'Brien scored a career-high 17 goals, but his fifth tally of the season didn't come until he scored Hershey's Teddy Bear Toss goal versus Wilkes-Barre/Scranton on Dec. 3, in his 20th game of the season. The Nova Scotia native has 86 points (43 goals, 43 assists) in his 246 AHL games with the Bears.
SUCCESS FOR STEVE:
Forward Steve Whitney earned his first assist of the season last night, giving him points in two straight games. For Whitney, the assist was his first in the AHL since Mar. 8, 2014 when he was then a member of the Norfolk Admirals. The younger brother of former Bear Joe Whitney, Steve scored his first goal with Hershey in the 2-0 win last Saturday at Charlotte. He spent last season with Hershey's ECHL affiliate, the South Carolina Stingrays, finishing second on the team with 54 points (18 goals, 36 assists).
PENALTY KILL GOING RIGHT DIRECTION:
The Bears have been perfect on the penalty kill in the past two games, going 10-for-10. Dating back to last Saturday, Hershey has killed 14 consecutive penalties. Hershey still only sits at 78% on the penalty kill this season after a slow start.
HOME DEBUTS:
Tonight could mark the home debut for Hershey forwards Jayson Megna, Steve Whitney, Derek Hulak, and Juuso Ikonen, as well as defenseman Logan Pyett. Megna was on the Washington Capitals roster during Hershey's opening weekend, while Ikonen was nursing an upper body injury.
