Belleville Senators News Release

The Belleville Senators fell under .500 again as they were beaten 3-1 by the Grand Rapids Griffins Saturday night at CAA Arena.

Belleville's goal came from Adam Tambellini while Filip Gustavsson made 28 saves. Patrik Rybar stopped 21 shots in the Griffins goal while Wade Megan, Chris Terry and Matt Puempel scored.

Tied at 1-1 heading into the third period, it was Grand Rapids who took the lead through the veteran Terry as he bagged his third of the season at 3:57 as his in-close shot off of Carter Camper's centering pass beat Gustavsson.

The Griffins got some insurance with 2:27 to play as Puempel buried Matthew Ford's cross-ice feed on a fortunate break as the Grand Rapids skated to an odd-man rush after Erik Burgdoerfer's stick exploded as he took a shot in the offensive zone.

Despite being outshot 9-3 in the opening period, the Senators were the ones to take the lead at 13:56 as Tambellini buried a rebound after Gabriel Gagne had been denied in-close on the power play as Tambellini scored his third goal of the season.

The Griffins tied the game with 1:59 left in the first as they took advantage of a Jordan Murray turnover and Megan was able to deflect a puck past Gustavsson for his second of the season. Belleville nearly took a late period lead as Tambellini rang the post in the dying seconds as he looked for his second of the night.

In a quiet second period, both teams had one glorious chance each. Grand Rapids had the first clean cut scoring opportunity as Dominic Turgeon was awarded a penalty shot after being hooked with 6:09 left in the period but Gustavsson stood tall to force him wide before making the save.

In the final minute of the period, Sens forward Drake Batherson was sprung on a breakaway and went backhand-forehand low but Rybar turned it aside to keep the game tied after 40 minutes.

Belleville is back in action on Wednesday when they visit Laval for the first time. The Sens are back home on Nov. 9 for their first match-up with Toronto. Tickets are available.
