Providence Bruins News Release

Providence, RI - The Providence Bruins fell to the Springfield Thunderbirds Saturday night 4-2 at the MassMutual Center. The P-Bruins got goals from Martin Bakos and Jan Kovar while Zane McIntyre made his fifth start of the season in net.

The P-Bruins offense kept the action in their zone for a majority of the first period, but ultimately it was the Thunderbirds who netted the opening goal of the night. Harry Zolnierczyk sent a cross-ice pass to Paul Thompson who had room to survey the ice. He saw Joel Lowry driving towards the net and centered the puck to him. Despite being held by a Providence defender, Lowry tipped home his second goal of the season at 10:38 to make it a 1-0 Springfield lead after one.

Bakos netted his first North American goal at 6:45 of the second period to things up 1-1. Colby Cave received the puck from Bakos in the right wings corner with room, and eventually got the puck back to him at the point. With Anton Blidh screening in front, Bakos blasted a one-timer by Samuel Montembeault for his first goal in a Bruins uniform. With just 90 seconds left in the period, Springfield stole the momentum back on a shorthanded goal to regain the lead. Riley Stillman stole the puck away from a P-Bruin and started a 2-on-1 break with Zolnierczyk. He passed to Zolnierczyk who went bar-down for his third goal of the season and the Thunderbirds brought a 2-1 lead into the second intermission.

Taking advantage of their third power play of the night, Providence again tied the game thanks to their pair of Slovakian teammates. With room to work at 3:32, Cehlarik received the puck from Cody Goloubef at the halfboards. He found Kovar open backdoor, and all he had to do was tap in his second goal of the season to things up 2-2. The score remained tied for until the final minutes, but with 3:44 left to play Zolnierczyk gave Springfield a lead they would not relinquish. Matt Mangene fired a shot that McIntyre stopped, but while falling down in the crease Zolnierczyk backhanded in his second goal of the night to give Springfield a 3-2 lead. An empty net goal for Thompson sealed the deal for the Thunderbirds, who went on to a 4-2 win.

McIntyre stopped 17-20 while Montembeault stopped 26-28. Providence was 1-3 on the power play and 3-3 on the penalty kill. The P-Bruins return home tomorrow at 3:05pm against the Bridgeport Sound Tigers for the ninth annual "Pink in the Rink" night in support of the Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Resource Foundation.
