LAST TIME VS. BAKERSFIELD

A game to forget for Stockton. The 8-1 loss on opening night seems like a long time ago for this Stockton Heat group that has continued to develop chemistry since that game. Bakersfield's Cameron Hebig scored to make it 1-0 in the first period, but the game would really be blown wide open with six goals in the middle frame for Bakersfield, who developed a 7-0 lead after forty minutes. Kerby Rychel would score the lone Heat goal in his first game in a Stockton sweater.

WHO TO WATCH

We normally go with a flashy, hot forward for the player to watch, but how about a guy who is really starting to establish himself as a key player for Stockton in all situations. Adam Ollas Mattsson is playing big minutes in all situations and the Swede recorded his first career multi-point game last night in the 5-4 shootout win.

Ollas Mattsson has taken on a much bigger responsibility this season, slotted alongside fellow countryman, Oliver Kylington. He has always been a smart player that reads the game well, but one area that he has improved is his ability to know when to advance the puck. Ollas Mattsson picked up his two assists last night for his first multi-point effort, including one on a beautiful odd-man rush goal that was initiated by the defenseman's read.

Keep your eye on this Swedish pairing as one that will be relied on to create offense, while also need to shut down Bakersfield's fast forward group.

LOCKDOWN IN SHOOTOUT

Jon Gillies and the Stockton Heat had a flare for the dramatic last night.

Sure, if you look at the box score and see eight goals scored in regulation and think goaltending wasn't the story of the game, but last night, Gillies played a big role in Stockton's 5-4 shootout win. Gillies was absolutely phenomenal in the shootout, stopping 12 of 14 shots, continually giving his team a chance to win in the shootout, which Matt Taormina did in the 14th round!

ROOKIE MAKING MOVES

Glenn Gawdin is quietly tied for the team lead in goals with four. The rookie potted two last night in San Diego and is starting to establish himself as a real threat on the power play for Stockton. The former captain of the WHL Champs, Swift Current Broncos, is picking up where he left off last season, scoring from all over the ice.

Last week, Heat Head Coach Cail MacLean talked about Gawdin's development and how he is working on the little things while making the adjustment to the pros. Whatever Gawdin is doing it is paying off around the goal. The rookie looks incredibly poised and is fitting right in with Stockton's high-powered offensive attack.

ROAD WARRIORS

All three of the Heat's wins this season have come on the road, marking the first time in team history that the team has won their first three games of the season, none of which have come from Stockton Arena.

All three wins for Stockton may have been one-goal wins, but all have come in very different ways. The Heat's most recent one-goal victory came last night in San Diego where the team had a comfortable 4-0 lead after 20 minutes, but allowed four straight goals from San Diego to force overtime. Stockton would win a wild one in the 14th round of the shootout, thanks to Jon Gillies and Matt Taormina.

Stockton mounted a comeback win in their second road game of the season against Ontario, winning in overtime, and this past Sunday, it was the Heat who carried the one-goal lead heading into the third on San Jose, and holding on for the win. The Heat have scored first and outshot their opponents in all three of those wins.

INTERESTING FACT

The Heat power play has been really good throughout the last six games, scoring in each of those games and posting an 8 for 31 (25.8%) conversion. The last time the Heat converted in six-straight was actually on 3/24 through 4/12 of the 2016-17 season in nine-straight games (team record) going 9 for 40 (22.5%).
