Worcester Red Sox News Release
ROCHESTER, N.Y. - The Worcester Red Sox (30-19, 69-55) got some early offense and 5.2 scoreless innings from Grant Gambrell in his Triple-A debut en route to a 6-3 win over the Rochester Red Wings (22-27, 56-66) on Saturday night at Innovative Field.
Niko Kavadas began the scoring for Worcester with a leadoff home run in the third inning off Jackson Rutledge.
Worcester tacked on three in the fourth. With one out in the inning, Ryan Fitzgerald hit a triple down the right field line. After walks to Christian Arroyo and Kavadas, Ceddanne Rafaela lined a bases-clearing double off the right-field wall to give the WooSox a 4-0 lead. The double was one of three hits for Rafaela, his sixth three-hit game at Triple-A.
That score held until the bottom of the eighth. With two on and one out, Richie Martin grounded a broken-bat single into right to bring in Rochester's first run. Then, the next batter, Cody Wilson, pulled a two-run single into left to make it a 4-3 game.
With two on and two out in the top of the ninth, Enmanuel Valdez hit a double down the left-field line that plated a pair and extended the lead to 6-3.
In his Triple-A debut, Grant Gambrell picked up the win and tossed 5.2 scoreless innings. Grambell allowed only two hits, walked four, and struck out five. He did not allow a hit until there were two outs in the fifth.
With Worcester's win and Lehigh Valley's losses in their doubleheader against Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, the WooSox are in sole possession of first place in the International League standings with 25 games remaining. It is the first time Worcester has been alone in first place since July 25.
The victory also improves the WooSox to 20-3 in Saturday games.
The WooSox wrap up their six-game series with the Red Wings tomorrow at 1:05 p.m. Brandon Walter is the scheduled starter for Worcester. Radio coverage begins at 12:45 p.m. on 98.9 Nash Icon and the rest of the WooSox Radio Network.
