Wings' Comeback Falls Just Short to WooSox
August 26, 2023 - International League (IL)
Rochester Red Wings News Release
The Rochester Red Wings fell in the fifth of a six-game set against Worcester, 6-3. Rochester's offense picked up eight hits after the fourth inning, including multi-hit efforts from CF Cody Wilson and SS Richie Martin.
Worcester kicked off the scoring in the third, via a solo home run off the bat of 1B Niko Kavadas. With the homer, opponents have now scored first in 10 of the last 11 games against the Wings dating back to 8/13 against Lehigh Valley.
LF Ryan Fitzgerald tripled to lead off the fourth, followed by a pair of subsequent walks to load the bases. Two batters later, CF Ceddanne Rafaela scored all three with a bases-clearing triple to make the score 4-0 after four.
Rochester was held hitless into the fifth until C Brady Lindsly logged a single through the right side to break up the no-hitter. CF Cody Wilson followed suit with a single of his own, but the Wings rally fell short with the bases left loaded.
With two outs in the eighth, DH Jake Noll roped a single, and 3B Erick Mejia walked to put runners on first and second for SS Richie Martin. The Detroit native pushed a single through the right side to score Noll, putting the Wings on the board. Lindsly then walked to load the bases in the next at-bat, and Wilson notched his second hit of the game to score Martin and Mejia and make the score 4-3.
Worcester cushioned their lead with a pair of runs in the top of the ninth, logging three consecutive hits with two out to push their lead to 6-3. Rochester was unable to mount a comeback in the ninth, falling behind three games to two in the series.
RHP Jackson Rutledge made his 10th career Triple-A start Saturday night, taking the loss. The right-hander logged 5.0 innings pitched, allowing four earned on five hits while striking out seven and walking four. RHP Luis Cessa followed with 2.0 scoreless innings in relief, his longest scoreless outing out of the bullpen since 8/15/2022 against Philadelphia with Cincinnati. RHP Amos Willingham and LHP Tim Cate combined to cover the final two frames, allowing two earned on five hits.
Rochester went a perfect 5-for-5 on ABS challenges, and are a perfect 9-for-9 over the last two games. Worcester went 1-for-3.
Saturday night's Diamond Pro Player of the Game goes to CF Cody Wilson. The West Palm Beach native posted a multi-hit game for the second-straight night, going 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI.
Rochester looks to salvage a series split in the series finale matinee Sunday afternoon. RHP Roddery Muñoz and WooSox LHP Brandon Walter match up for the second time this series. First pitch is set for 1:05 p.m.
