Amarillo, TX 12/30/08 - Amarillo Gorillas' standout defenseman Sam Ftorek has been named a starter for the 2009 CHL All-Star Game, the Central Hockey League announced Tuesday.

Ftorek, who joined the Gorillas just prior to the 2008-09 season, moved to defense three games into the season. Following the move, the one-time forward has scored 11 goals and 19 assists, and is tied for the league lead in defense scoring with 30 points through 27 games.

"I am thrilled to be named as a starter for the 2009 CHL All-Star Game," Ftorek said. "Especially after moving from forward to defense, to be recognized with the honor is fantastic."

The 34-year-old leads all CHL defensemen with his 11 tallies, and is tied for the Amarillo team lead with two game-winning goals. 14 of his 30 points this season have come while the Gorillas are on the man advantage.

Ftorek was voted into the starting role by CHL coaches and members of the media. He will join fellow defenseman Justin Kinnunen (TEX), goaltender Andy Franck (OKC), and forwards Joel Irving (ARZ), Rich Hansen (RPD), and Darryl Smith (LAR) as starters for the 2009 game.

The 2009 CHL All-Star Game will be held at the Budweiser Events Center in Loveland, CO. It will feature a new, revised format that pits the Colorado Eagles against the CHL All-Stars from around the league. The January 14th game can be viewed worldwide via the CHL Network, or locally in Amarillo at Buffalo Wild Wings (5416 S. Coulter).
