Third Period Pounding Leads to Thunder Win

WICHITA, KS- The Wichita Thunder defeated the Tulsa Oilers 5-2 on Wednesday evening at the Kansas Coliseum.

Brad Thompson scored two goals and an assist, while the Thunder scored three goals in the third period to take command of the game.

Trailing 1-0, Thompson tied the game with his first goal of the night at 1:07 into the second period. Joel Hanson scored his first Thunder goal at 6:05 to give Wichita its first lead. Jake Riddle scored the second of his two goals for Tulsa to tie the game at 2-2 at the 14:09 mark in the second.

With the game tied into the third period, Thompson gave Wichita the lead for good with his second goal at 7:21. Bryan Nathe tipped in a rebound on the power play at 13:30, giving Wichita a two-goal advantage. Less than a minute later, Matt Byrnes scored off of a turnover at 14:09, and the Thunder led 5-2.

Three fights also took place in the third, with Connor MacDonald squaring off against Jake Riddle on two separate occasions. Troy Ofukany and Kevin Hansen also dropped the gloves later in the period.

Jason Duda, named to the All-Star team earlier in the afternoon, collected three assists. Wichita finished a combined +12.

Krister Toews earned the win, saving 15 of 17 shots. The 17 shots against were the lowest total allowed by Wichita this season. The win gave the Thunder its second three-game winning streak of the year.
