Bucks Provide Fireworks In 8-3 Win

LAREDO, TX- The Laredo Bucks of the Central Hockey League beat the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees 8-3 on New Year's Eve, in front of 4,512 fans at the Laredo Entertainment Center. With the win the Bucks snap their four-game winless streak, and improve their Southeast Division leading record to 19-8-3 (41pts). Laredo has a two-point lead on the Texas Brahmas.

The Bucks are 6-1 All-Time on New Year's Eve, including 5-0 against the Killer Bees.

Bobby Russell had four points (1-3=4), while Jeff Bes (1-2=3), Rick Kozak (1-2=3), and Steve Weidlich (0-3=3) all had three points to lead the Bucks.

Bes has 497 points in his Laredo Bucks career.

Laredo (14-3 at home) came out on fire in the first period, scoring four goals to take a 4-1 lead after one.

The Killer Bees (13-14=2), however, scored first to make it 1-0 as Jesse Bennefield broke past the Bucks defense and jammed in a shot past Sebastien Centomo's blocker. The strike was Bennefield's 14th of the year.

The Bucks have now given up the first goal in six straight games.

The rest of the game was all Laredo.

Matt Miller tied the game at 1-1 at the 10:33 mark of the first, as he took the puck from the near corner, skated through the crease and poked it past Wylie Rogers' blocker. Miller's goal was his second of the season, and his first at the LEC as a Buck. Bobby Russell (18) and Igor Agarunov (7) picked up assists.

Laredo took a 2-1 lead as they struck on a five-on-three power-play with 4:42 left in the first. Jeff Bes slammed home a shot from the right side of the crease to score his 11th goal of the year.

The Bucks would increase their lead to 3-1 with 2:43 left in the first, when Agarunov deflected a Steve Weidlich shot past Rogers from right in front of the crease. The tally was Agaruno's sixth of the year, with Weidlich picking up his eigth assist.

Laredo would strike as they scored at the buzzer of the first period. Ryan Salvis tipped in a Rick Kozak shot with no time left on the clock. The officials reviewed the goal, and said it went in before time expired. The goal was Salvis'sixth of the year.

The Bucks outshot the Bees 15-7 in the first.

Laredo would score three goals in the second period to increase their lead to 7-1 after 40 minutes.

The Bucks would make it 5-1 as they struck short-handed 6:21 into the second. Bes found Russell on a two-on-one break at the left side of the crease, with Russell beating Rogers past his blocker. The goal was Russell's sixth of the season, with Bes and Adam Rivetvpicking up the assists.

Laredo increased their lead to 6-1 on a five-on-three power-play when Serge Dube tipped home a power-play goal right in front of the Bees net. The strike was Dube's sixth of the season, with Bes and Jason Dixon picking up assists.

Rick Kozak made it 7-1 as he fired a slap shot from the high slot past Rogers 10:02 into the second period. Kozak's 11th of the year knocked Rogers out of the game, as he was replaced in net by Christian Boucher.

The Bucks once again outshot the Bees in the period, this time by a 10-9 count.

The Killer Bees would score twice in the third period, as Dennis Maxwell and Kurtis Dulle would make cut the Bucks lead to 7-3.

The Bucks would score their second short-handed goal of the night with 3:04 to go in the game, when Salvis scored his second of the night.

Centomo stopped 22 of 25 shots to improve to 12-7-1 in net this year.

The Bucks will play their first game of 2009 on Saturday, when they host the Texas Brahmas in a big Southeast Division match-up.
