RiverKings Ring Out The Mudbugs, 6-0

(Southaven, MS) -- The Mississippi RiverKings rang out the old year in grand fashion, shutting out the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs 6-0 at the DeSoto Civic Center on New Years Eve. The win was the RiverKings' second straight victory and first this season against their rivals from Louisiana.

Goaltender Kevin Beech earned his first shutout of the season and second for RiverKing goaltenders in the 2008-09 Central Hockey League regular season campaign.

Mississippi opened the evening up with a three-goal barrage in the space of 38 seconds. Jeff Nelson scored a power play goal at 15:35, his eighth of the season and fifth power play goal.

The RiverKings continued with Brad Bonello scoring his tenth goal of the season for a 2-0 lead, and Matt Pierce made it 3-0 with his seventh goal of the season at 16:13.

In the second period, Mississippi added to the lead with a power play goal from Andrew Lackner at 9:02 of the session for a 4-0 lead after forty minutes.

The RiverKings added the finishing touches in the final period, as Bobby Chaumont scored his 17th goal of the year at 4:43, followed by Matt Summers adding his fifth goal of the year at 15:41 for the final 6-0 score.

Mississippi scored twice on the power play in eight tries, while Bossier-Shreveport was scoreless in six power play opportunities. The RiverKings held Bossier-Shreveport to 17 shots on net, while taking 39 shots of their own in the victory.

With the win, the RiverKings are tied with Bossier-Shreveport for second place in the Northeast Division, each with 36 points. Mississippi moves to 18-11-0, while the Mudbugs fell to 17-10-2. Both teams are six points behind the front-running Oklahoma City Blazers.
