Former Lynx Players Named To World Baseball Classic Rosters

OTTAWA- The participating countries in the upcoming World Baseball Classic recently unveiled their 60-man provisional rosters, and 26 former Ottawa Lynx players have been named as part of the elite list. Four former Lynx, LHP ERIK BEDARD, RHP MIKE JOHNSON, OF MATT STAIRS and OF JEREMY WARE, were named to Team Canada's provisional roster.

In total, ten countries have named former Lynx players to their respective provisional rosters, including Australia, Canada, Dominican Republic, Italy, Korea, Mexico, Panama, Puerto Rico, United States and Venezuela. The following is a complete list of Lynx alumni named to provisional rosters:

Australia: (1) RHP John Stephens

Canada: (4) LHP Erik Bedard, RHP Mike Johnson, OF Matt Stairs, OF Jeremy Ware

Dominican Republic: (3) RHP Miguel Batista, CA Sandy Martinez, RHP Guillermo Mota

Italy: (2) RHP Tony Fiore, INF Joe Vitiello

Korea: (1) RHP Sunny Kim

Mexico: (3) RHP Luis Ayala, LHP Rigo Beltran, CA Geronimo Gil

Panama: (4) LHP Bruce Chen, OF Sherman Obando, OF Ruben Rivera, INF Fernando Seguignol

Puerto Rico: (4) RHP Dicky Gonzalez, OF, Luis Matos, RHP Javier Vazquez, 2B Jose Vidro

United States: (2) CA Michael Barrett, CA Brian Schneider

Venezuela: (2) RHP Tony Armas Jr., OF Endy Chavez

The 60-man rosters had to be established by the Tuesday, January 17 deadline. From those lists, each country must now bring the roster down to 30 before the event begins on March 3.

The World Baseball Classic has been gaining momentum with the star-studded lineups expected to take the field in this event. Other countries participating in the 16 team inaugural event are China, Chinese Taipei, Cuba, Japan, Netherlands and South Africa.

The World Baseball Classic will take place from March 3-20, 2006 with games taking place in the United States, Puerto Rico and Japan. The 16 teams will be divided into four pools of four where the top two teams from each pool will advance to the second round. The top two teams from each second round bracket will then advance to the single-elimination semifinals and final.

The Ottawa Lynx open their 2006 season on April 6th when they host the Louisville Bats at Lynx Stadium. Opening day 2006 is only 76 days away!
