San Diego Gulls News Release
SAN DIEGO - The San Diego Gulls shook up their front office Friday, but the team still couldn't find a way to beat Las Vegas. Matt Dzieduszycki and Steve Crampton connected on three first-period scores, as the Wranglers overcame an early deficit to defeat the Gulls, 5-3 before 5,079 at ipayOne Center.
Earlier in the day, San Diego promoted head coach Martin St. Amour to general manager and director of hockey operations. The move leaves associate coach Jamie Black and assistant coach B.J. MacPherson behind to bench to lead the club for the rest of the season.
Against Las Vegas (30-6-4), meanwhile, the Gulls (17-15-4) failed to capitalize on a pair of opportunities. They could have pulled into a tie for second place in the Pacific Division while in the process moving to four games above .500 for the first time all year. Instead, San Diego dropped to 0-3 against the Wranglers this season - by a combined score of 18-7 - and still remain in third, two points back of Long Beach.
The Gulls actually led early in this one when Richard Keyes scored off a nice back-handed, power-play goal 6:09 into the match. But Las Vegas responded with three unanswered goals in less than five minutes to take a 3-1 advantage into the first intermission. Dzieduszycki notched two of the scores and later assisted on a short-handed tally by Crampton off a delayed penalty. For the game, the duo combined for eight points, including Dzieduszycki's two goals and Crampton's three assists.
San Diego tried to come back in the second frame and again in the third, pulling within 3-2 and later 4-3. The Wranglers, however, thwarted both attempts before holding off the Gulls, who got out-shot 38-34.
Already short-handed with five regulars out of the lineup, San Diego lost two players in the opening period alone Friday. Forward Pierre-Luc Sleigher got kicked out of the game for fighting, while Kelly Askew took a puck off his foot and didn't return.
Las Vegas entered Friday's game with the most wins and points in the entire ECHL while ranking second in winning percentage.
