San Diego Gulls News Release

SAN DIEGO - The San Diego Gulls announced Friday that Martin St. Amour, the franchise's all-time leading scorer, has been promoted to general manager and director of hockey operations. That will leave the on-ice coaching duties to both Jamie Black and B.J. MacPherson.

As the general manager and director of hockey operations, St Amour will handle all team personnel decisions, including player acquisitions, trades and assignments from the Colorado Avalanche, San Diego's NHL affiliate. In addition, St. Amour will have a much more detailed responsibility in the club's player development. Some of these new responsibilities will include breakdown of game footage, individual player assessment, scouting and on-ice system management.

"This new position is perfect for me," St. Amour said. "A lot of what is involved with being a GM can be taken care of remotely. Unfortunately, my mother is facing a battle with cancer that will see me out of town quite frequently.

"Most importantly, I need to have the ability to tend to the responsibilities with both my family and the team. I feel very confident that this will allow me to be successful at both."

"Jamie and B.J. have really stepped it up this year and have pretty much already taken over most of the coaching. I have the utmost confidence in their abilities. With me having to be out of town so much for family responsibilities, I feel I would be doing a disservice to the players if I were to keep things status quo. This truly is the best thing for everyone."

As of Friday, the Gulls sit one point behind the second-place Long Beach Ice Dogs in the Pacific Division, with two games in hand. The Gulls have the second-best winning percentage in the division and the top four teams in the Pacific will qualify for the playoffs.
