Fitzsimmons Selects Playoff Roster
April 1, 2003 - ECHL (ECHL)
South Carolina Stingrays News Release
NORTH CHARLESTON, SC South Carolina Stingrays Head Coach Jason Fitzsimmons selected his playoff roster yesterday, in preparation for the team's first round series against the Pee Dee Pride. The Stingrays will have 19 players on the playoff roster with Mike Jickling on the injured list. Jickling is not expected to play until the third round of the playoffs, should the Rays advance that far.
This season's playoff roster does not contain any surprise additions or subtractions.
"In the past we have had some tough decisions to make with injuries and call-ups," explained Fitzsimmons. "With the exception of Mike Jickling, we are healthy and ready to go this season. Mike will start the playoffs on the injured list and will help the coaching staff during the first two rounds.
In the past, teams were unable to place players on the injured list during the playoffs, leaving coaches and General Managers with some tough decisions before the start of the post season, due to salary cap issues. The Stingrays are benefiting from the new rule this season, with 19 players eligible to play in the first round.
Rich Spiller, a defenseman, who joined the team last week, was included on this season's playoff roster.
"Rich gives us a different dimension on the blue line," added Fitzsimmons. "He plays a different style of defense than some of the other guys. He has made us a better team.
The puck drops on the Stingrays run at a third Kelly Cup on Wednesday at 7:00 at the North Charleston Coliseum.
