Fresno Falcons News Release

FRESNO, Calif. – The West Coast Hockey League has named Falcons rookies Scott Borders and Colin Embley to its All-Rookie Team and defenseman Cory Murphy and forward Jason Weaver to its All-WCHL Team.

Borders and Embley have been running number one and number two essentially all season in the league's rookie scoring race. Embley enters tonight's game with the Bakersfield Condors leading the WCHL's first-year players with 43 points. He is the leading rookie goal scorer with 24 and is tied for the lead with 19 assists. Embley also has five game-winning goals, while no other rookie has recorded more than one, and along with Borders is tied for the lead with seven power play markers.

Borders joined the Falcons just in time for last year's Taylor Cup run and is ranked second in rookie scoring now in his first full professional season. He trails only Embley with 19 goals and is tied with fellow Falcons rookie Jordan Landry for third with 16 assists. He also has the distinction of being the only rookie to have recorded a hat trick this season, a feat he has accomplished twice.

Murphy adds All-WCHL accolades to his playing resume after making the league 's second team last year. In his third season as a Falcon, he is the franchise's all-time leading scorer among defensemen with 156 points (41g-115a). He has eclipsed the 50-point barrier for the third straight season, leads the league in goal scoring among defensemen with 15 and is second in total points with 51. Remarkably, prior to joining the Falcons he had never recorded more than 14 points in a season as a pro.

Weaver joins Murphy on the All-WCHL Team and is tied for ninth in the league with 65 points and a team-leading 43 assists. His reputation as one of the league's premiere two-way players is bolstered by his +29 rating on a team where the next highest rating is a +11. Weaver is tied for fourth in the league with 11 power play goals and tied for third with three short-handed tallies.

The inclusion of Murphy and Weaver on the All-WCHL Team marks the second time in team history that two Falcons players have earned such honors. Former Falcons Craig Lyons and Bob Wilkie were each named 1st Team All-WCHL in 1997-98.

Fresno completes their regular season home schedule tomorrow night in a preview of their first round Taylor Cup Playoff match-up with the Idaho Steelheads. The Falcons and Steelheads face-off at 7 p.m. at Selland Arena with the defending champions wearing vintage green and gold sweaters to commemorate the final regular season game at Selland before the club moves to the Save Mart Center for the 2003-2004 season.
