Providence Bruins News Release

Providence, RI - The Providence Bruins fell to the Springfield Falcons 2-1 on Friday evening at the Dunkin' Donuts Center. The P-Bruins got their lone goal from rookie Yury Alexandrov, the first of his North American professional career.

The first period got off to a flying start with both teams notching goals. Springfield got onto the board first at the 4:04 mark off a power play goal from Michael Blunden. Providence dominated the rest of the period as they continuously capitalized on errant Springfield passes. Their hard work paid off at the 10:44 mark when Alexandrov rifled a shot from the point, blanking Springfield goalie David LeNeveu. The goal provided Alexandrov his second point of the season. Maxime Sauvé and Matt Bartkowski picked up the assists.

The two Atlantic Division rivals made their animosity towards each other clear with multiple scuffles throughout the second period. Providence killed all five penalties it was assessed in the frame and, despite both teams going scoreless in the second, the P-Bruins largely dominated play in all three zones with quality chances by veterans Jordan LaVallee-Smotherman and Kirk MacDonald. On the other side, veteran goaltender Nolan Schaefer made it look easy with multiple acrobatic saves in his Providence debut.

Fans had a false alarm in the opening minutes of the third period as the officials called off Alexandrov's second goal of the game. Minutes later, it looked like Kirk MacDonald put Providence on the board, but the play was derailed when the net was knocked off. Despite an intense fore-check and multiple chances for Providence, the rest of the period went scoreless, sending the game into overtime.

The P-Bruins were unable to capitalize on odd man rushes and rebounds in the overtime, sending Providence into its first shootout of the 2010-11 season. Providence went just 1-for-4 in the shootout when Sauvé sniped a shot past LeNeveu in the third round, but Springfield ended the contest, scoring on 3-of-5 shootout chances.

Schaefer suffered the loss, stopping 16 of 17 shots in regulation and 1-of-4 in the shootout for Providence. LeNeveu stopped 26 shots in regulation and 3-of-4 for Springfield in the shootout to earn his first win.

Providence out-shot Springfield 27-18 and killed eight of nine penalties, while going 1-for-6 on the power play.

Providence gets back into action on Saturday on the road, traveling to New Hampshire to take on the Manchester Monarchs. The P-Bruins wrap up the weekend at The Dunk on Sunday in a 4:05 p.m. match-up with the Hartford Wolf Pack. P-Bruins ticket packages and individual game tickets are now on sale for the 2010-11 season.
