
Desjardins, Admirals Shut Down Sharks in Home Opener

NORFOLK, Va. - Cedrick Desjardins made 29 saves - many as his team killed off eight opponent power plays - as the Norfolk Admirals (2-0-0-0) shut out the Worcester Sharks (1-1-0-1), 4-0, on Friday night at Norfolk Scope Arena in the Admirals' first home action of the 2010-11 season.
James Wright had a three-point night - including a crucial late second-period goal after the Admirals had killed off a long sequence of Worcester power plays. After killing off 3:27 of penalties in the second period - including over a minute of five-on-three time - Wright scored on a deflection of an Alex Berry shot with 1:36 left in the second period.
Norfolk opened scoring just 2:16 into the game on a Ty Wishart shot from the left point through a screen. The Admirals' lead doubled on a shorthanded tally less than two minutes later. Matt Fornataro spotted Mathieu Roy with a cross-crease pass for a one-timer from the right circle at 4:04.
Paul Szczechura cemented the victory with a turnaround wrist shot from the right circle at with 4:54 remaining in regulation.
Cedrick Desjardins (29 shots, 29 saves) earned the shutout victory in his Norfolk debut. Alex Stalock (25 shots, 21 saves) took the loss.
Norfolk was 0-3 on the power play and remained perfect on the penalty kill after stopping all eight Worcester power plays.
The Admirals and Sharks will square off once again tomorrow night at Scope. The puck drops at 7:15 p.m. The Admirals will hold their first post-game skate of the season where fans can skate at Scope with their favorite Admirals following the game. A limited amount of skates will be available free of charge or fans may bring their own skates.
