Eagles Drop Seventh Road Game of Season, 4-2 in Idaho

Colorado Eagles News Release

BOISE, Idaho - The Idaho Steelheads defeated the Colorado Eagles, 4-2, in the second game of a three-game series at CenturyLink Arena this week. The loss dropped Colorado to 0-5-2 on the road this season, and each loss would have been by a one-goal margin if not for an empty-net tally from Idaho in the final minute of the game.

Following an unsuccessful Eagles power play in the first few minutes of the opening period, the Steelheads got on the board just under five minutes in when Austin Smith knocked home the puck from the low slot for his second goal in as many games.

The middle of the opening period saw plenty of back-and-forth action, along with some great saves by both netminders, none bigger than when Josh Robinson moved right to left and stacked the pads to stonewall Chad Costello -- the league's leading scorer -- on a Colorado rush.

Idaho was able to double its lead with a power-play goal in the final minute of the frame when Kael Mouillierat picked up a failed clearing attempt in the right circle and snapped a shot past Tyler Plante. That man-advantage marker made the Steelheads 1-for-2 in the period, while Colorado's top-ranked power play went 0-for-2.

The Eagles killed a Steelheads' power play to start the second period and converted that momentum into a goal 2:35 in to cut Idaho's lead in half. Costello picked up a turnover at center ice, broke into the offensive zone along the right wing wall and found Michael Forney skating through the slot where he displayed some nifty stickhandling before depositing his league-leading 17th goal past Robinson.

But three minutes later, the Steelheads were able to get their two-goal cushion back when Smith picked up his second goal of the night from in front by putting home an Austin Fyten rebound. The Eagles killed two more Idaho power plays in the period -- a frame in which they received none -- and built some momentum late in the session with several quality scoring chances that just missed a finishing touch.

Colorado carried that momentum into the final frame -- in which they out-shot the Steelheads 17-7 -- but they couldn't get enough shots past Robinson. Costello cut Idaho's lead to 3-2 at 6:10 with a goal from between the circles after Jake Marto forced a turnover along the left midboards, but the Eagles couldn't convert on their third and final power play of the game minutes later, and their final push was spoiled when Mouillierat scored for the second time in the game with a long-distance empty-netter in the final minute.
