Greenville Swamp Rabbits News Release
Estero, FL: The Everblades collected their first win of the season against the Road Warriors on Saturday night by a score of 4-3.
Ryan O'Byrne started the scoring off 1:28 into the game. On Teddy Bear Toss Night the area was flooded with bears that lead to a short stoppage after the defenseman's first Everblades goal. O' Byrne drove a shot from the point past goalie Nathan Lieuwen. Five seconds later Brendan Connolly would drop the gloves with Aaron Bogosian. Sean Berkstresser tied the game with his seventh goal of the season on a breakaway opportunity. He received a pass from Scott Pitt and broke into the zone. Only one other infraction was assessed in the period with a tripping call against Francis Verreault that Florida did not score on.
Verreault scored for the Road Warriors just 2:09 into the second period. Andrew Yogan passed the puck to Brendan Connolly behind the net who fed Verreault in the slot for his fourth of the season. David Rutherford would respond for the Everblades with his seventh of the year. He received a pass on the back door from Brayden Irwin to tie the game at two. Florida's powerplay would continue to click against the Road Warriors as Matt Beca scored his seventh of the year.
The third period began with Florida's third consecutive goal by forward Justin Shugg. O'Byrne directed a shot on net that rebounded to Shugg for his sixth of the year. The Road Warriors would make things interesting with Marc-Olivier Vallerand blasting a wrist shot past Pat Nagle. Brandon Wong gave a pass to Vallerand who beat the defense into the zone and scored his eight of the year. The Road Warriors comeback would end up short as Florida held the game at a 4-3 score. Nagle was the winning goaltender stopping 28 of 31 shots. Lieuwen took his first loss against the Everblades saving 15 of 19 shots.
The Road Warriors return home next Friday night as they host the Gwinnett Gladiators at 7 p.m. Friday night's game features Hockey Happy Hour beginning at 5 p.m. in the Charter Business Plaza. Fans can enjoy free food, discounted drinks and live entertainment courtesy of Zirkelbach Construction, WSSL 100.5 and ABC Party Rentals. Friday will also be Teddy Bear Toss Night Benefiting Toys for Tots Program. Fans can bring their teddy bear to the game and throw their bear on the ice after the Road Warriors score their first goal. The bears will be donated to Toys for Tots on December 8 by the Road Warriors players and Rowdy at Sitton Buick. Tickets are on sale now at the BI-LO Center Box Office and ticketmaster.com.
