Elmira Jackals News Release
TRENTON, N.J. - December 1, 2012 - The Elmira Jackals picked up a point for making it to overtime, but lost 7-6 to the Trenton Titan's on Saturday night at the Sun National Bank Center. Trenton won the shootout 1-0 and moved Elmira's record to 9-8-2 on the season.
Scoring in the first period came at a break-neck pace as the Jackals and Titans traded the lead a couple of times. Elmira went up 1-0 when Chaz Johnson sent home his second goal in as many games. It came just 3:56 into the contest and was set up by Andrew Rowe and Justin DaCosta. After a few minutes of relative calm, the pace picked up exponentially. At 12:04 the Titans grabbed a power play goal from Steven Schultz to tie the game and Marcel Noebels followed 50 seconds later to put Trenton in front for the first time. Elmira answered back 18 seconds later with Jean Bourbeau's second goal of the season. The see-saw battle continued, though, when Noebels scored his second, this one on the power play, at 15:35. The madness reached its peak when Andrew Rowe scored on a backhand at 17:48 to tie the score at three. Maxime Clermont stopped 14 of the 17 shots he saw in the first while Niko Hovinen thwarted six of nine.
Scott Wedgewood replaced Hovinen at the start of the second and denied 12 of the 13 shots Elmira sent his way. Louie Caporusso scored 5:49 into the second on the power play to put Elmira ahead 4-3, but Trenton needed just over four minutes to draw even. Noebels scored on a wrist shot from the left wing to cap his hat trick. Andy Bombach added a power play marker at 15:41 that put the Titans in the driver's seat heading into the third.
Elmira wasted no time in coming back to tie it as Bourbeau swatted home a loose puck after Wedgewood failed to catch Jordon Southorn's point shot. It came 45 seconds into the stanza. Justin Taylor answered back at 4:17 to lift the Titans in front, again, by one goal at 6-5. Undaunted, the Jackals stormed right back with Artem Demkov putting home his 10th of the season at 4:30. Despite several quality scoring chances over the rest of the third, the goaltenders slammed the doors at both ends and sent the game to overtime tied at six.
Trenton launched all four of the shots in overtime, but Clermont stood his ground and moved the game to a shootout. Demkov, Rowe, Kyle Bushee, Caporusso, and Jack Downing were all stopped by Wedgewood. Stephen Schultz was the only Titan to score on Clermont, but it was enough to earn the extra standings point.
Clermont took the loss while stopping 33 shots. The Jackals went 1-for-3 on the power play and 3-for-6 on the penalty kill.
