Reign Come from Behind to Stop Thunder 5-4
December 1, 2012 - ECHL (ECHL)
Ontario Reign News Release
ONTARIO, Calif. - The Ontario Reign (14-5-0-0), defending Pacific Division Champions and proud affiliate of the NHL's 2012 Stanley Cup Champion Los Angeles Kings, had a huge come from behind win over the Stockton Thunder (11-5-2-0) before a crowd of 6,555 on Friday, Nov. 30.
The Thunder jumped to an early one-goal lead just 2:29 into play when Yannick Riendeau received a pass from Teigan Zahn at the Reign blue line and split the defense to poke the puck past Chris Carrozzi. Mario Lamoureux answered for the Reign to even the score at 8:45 for his seventh goal of his rookie season. Everett Sheen and Brady Calla earned the helpers on the goal. The Thunder took back the lead with 3:09 left in the frame. Harrison Reed lifted the puck over Carrozzi while he was still on the ice from stopping Garet Hunt's wraparound attempt.
In the second period neither team could convert their two power plays. The Reign killed the five minute major penalty assessed to Cameron Burt and the Thunder kept Ontario away even with 55 seconds of a two-man disadvantage. This was the only frame the Thunder outshot the Reign as they fired nine shots on Carrozzi to the Reign's four on Reichard.
The Reign came alive in the third period with two more equalizing goals from C.J. Stretch and Chris Huxley. Stretch and Derek Couture flew into the Thunder zone and through traffic took advantage of a bouncing puck that got past Cody Reichard. Reed once again put the Thunder ahead, this time on a two-man advantage, firing a slapshot from the high slot past Carrozzi at the 14:38 mark. In true Reign style, Huxley waited until just 1:13 was left in regulation to tie the game and force overtime. Justin Pender and Kyle Clifford each earned an assist on the goal.
Ontario came flying out of the gate in the extra frame and within 27 seconds, Colton Yellow Horn scored the game-winning goal for the Reign. Paul Mara took possession of the puck in the neutral zone and passed it up to Dan DaSilva to the right of Reichard. The winger sent a pass across to Yellow Horn who was waiting at the top of the right circle. Yellow Horn caught the puck on the backside of his stick and quickly moved it to his forehand where he made an impossible top-shelf shot through Reichard and the right post to win the game.
Carrozzi stopped 17 of 21 Thunder shots, and Reichard took the loss with 22 saves on 27 Reign shots.
