Zapolski, Rays Blank Gladiators 2-0
December 1, 2012 - ECHL (ECHL)
Atlanta Gladiators News Release
NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. - Former Gladiator goaltender Ryan Zapolski stopped 34 shots and the South Carolina Stingrays held on for a 2-0 win Saturday night at North Charleston Coliseum.
Gwinnett (15-6-1-0) remains atop the South Division and Eastern Conference with 31 points, while the Rays (10-12-0-2) picked up their third win in a row.
South Carolina got off to a flying start in the first thanks to standout special teams. Forward Tyler Johnson buried a wrister from the low slot on the power play to open the scoring at 7:04. Andrew Sackrison then added to the lead at 13:08, as he raced past the Gwinnett defense and beat Mike Lee on a short-handed breakaway to make it 2-0 through 20 minutes.
Gwinnett came back in the second with a flurry of chances, outshooting the Rays 11-4, but still trailed by two into the third. Zapolski blanked his old team the rest of the way, coming up big during a Gwinnett shooting gallery in the losing minutes.
Coyotes prospect Mike Lee took the hard luck loss, turning aside 18 shots and denying Stingrays Forward Hunter Bishop on a third period penalty shot to keep Gwinnett in the game.
The Gladiators are next in action on December 8th at the Arena at Gwinnett Center, as they face division rival Greenville at 7:05 p.m. on Sing for Santa Weekend.
