Dayton Dragons News Release
Cedar Rapids, Iowa - Cedar Rapids pitchers Cole Sands and Austin Schulfer combined on a three-hit shutout as the Kernels defeated the Dayton Dragons 4-0 on Sunday afternoon. The game was played at a lightning-quick pace in one hour, 50 minutes, just one minute longer than the shortest game in Dragons history on May 27, 2005.
Sands worked the first seven innings, allowing all three Dayton hits with no walks and six strikeouts to earn the win. Cedar Rapids scored two runs in the first inning, another in the second, and one more in the seventh.
The Dragons could never mount an offensive attack and had only one runner reach second base. That came in the fifth inning when Shard Munroe doubled to the center field fence to start the inning. But when the next hitter, Miguel Hernandez, grounded back to the pitcher, Munroe was tagged out trying to advance to third, and the Dragons never threatened again. Jay Schuyler had two hits, both singles, to account for the rest of the Dayton offense. Dragons hitters did not draw a walk in the game.
Dragons starter pitcher James Marinan (1-3) became the first Dayton hurler to go more than five innings this season. Marinan worked seven innings, throwing just 68 pitches. He allowed four runs on nine hits with no walks and five strikeouts to suffer the loss. Jerry D'Andrea tossed one perfect inning in relief of Marinan.
The Dragons could not complete a sweep of the series in Cedar Rapids after winning on Friday and Saturday. They completed the road trip with a 2-4 record and fell to 10-19 for the year.
Notes: The Dragons did not commit an error in the series in Cedar Rapids and had only one on the six-game road trip. They had 36 errors in 23 games when the trip began.
