Dewees Saves the Day in San Antonio

DES MOINES, IA - Fueled by a big night from Trent Giambrone and a historic pitching performance by outfielder Donnie Dewees, the Iowa Cubs (57-46) defeated the San Antonio Missions (63-40) 5-4 as the

San Antonio struck early with a pair of runs in the first inning, knocking Iowa starter Tyson Miller from the game after 33 pitches in 0.2 frames.

Iowa began the comeback effort in the third inning, scraping across a run with a two-out rally capped off by an RBI single from Ian Happ. The I-Cubs locked the game a 2-2 with an RBI double from Trent Giambrone.

Giambrone snapped a nine-game homerless streak with a two-run blast in the sixth to give Iowa its first lead of the game at 4-2. He became the first I-Cub since Javier Báez and Kris Bryant in 2014 to hit 20 home runs in a season.

Tyrone Taylor answered with a solo home run in the bottom of the inning, then three batters later, Mauricio Dubon knocked in the tying run off Carl Edwards Jr. He escaped the inning without further damage to keep the score deadlocked at 4-4.

Dixon Machado gave the I-Cubs the lead for good in the eighth with an RBI single. Randy Rosario steadied the ship with 2.0 scoreless innings late in the game, followed by Donnie Dewees spinning a scoreless ninth to secure the win.

Dewees, an outfielder making his first ever appearance on the mound, retired the last three batters he faced after giving up a leadoff single and struck out Tyrone Taylor to end the game.

POSTGAME NOTES:

- Dakota Mekkes had his longest outing since a 3.0-inning performance on April 10, 2017 with Single-A South Bend.

- Dillon Maples spun 2.0 scoreless outings for the fourth time in Triple-A or the MLB and for the first time since June 27, 2018 against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

- Trent Giambrone is the fastest I-Cub to 20 home runs in a season at 94 games since Kris Bryant did so in 2014. From the start of the season, Giambrone's July 24 date for his 20th home run was the quickest since Anthony Rizzo did so on June 10, 2012.
