Devils Lose Battle Versus Pirates, 3-1

April 3, 2009 - American Hockey League (AHL) - Albany Devils News Release

LOWELL, Mass. - Mathieu Darche scored two goals for the Portland Pirates as the Lowell Devils lost a key match-up in their playoff hunt, 3-1, on Friday at the Tsongas Arena. Despite firing 36 shots on net, the Devils were repeatedly denied by Pirates netminder Jhonas Enroth to fall six points out of the fourth and final playoff spot in the Atlantic Division.

With the only power play of the first period, Portland gained a 1-0 edge as Scott Clemmensen got a piece of Mike Kostka's point shot, but couldn't stop Darche from shoveling in the rebound at 17:01.

After a scoreless second, the Devils were able to battle back to tie the contest early in the final period. At 3:13 Vladimir Zharkov sent a cross-zone feed to the near point for Tyler Eckford, who wristed a shot toward the crease that Pascal Rheaume tipped down and through the leg pads of Enroth.

A bad bounce 1:23 later gave the Pirates the lead for good when Clemmensen's clearing attempt from in front of his net deflected off of Darche and back across the goal line.

Marek Zagrapan completed the scoring with an empty-net goal with 1.4 seconds left in regulation.

The Lowell Devils host their Fan Appreciation Night on Saturday, April 4 as they take on the Springfield Falcons at 7:00 p.m. The first 2,000 fans will receive a Scott Clemmensen Bobblehead, courtesy of Fallon Community Health Plan.
