Bridgeport Islanders News Release
ALBANY, NY - The Bridgeport Sound Tigers lost to the Albany Devils Friday night by a final score of 6-1. Mike Halmo got the lone goal for the Sound Tigers, his 10th of the season. It was a one-goal game going into the third, with Albany leading 2-1, but four Devils goals in the final period made the difference on the night.
The Devils scored the opening goal of the game less than five minutes in, after Brett Gallant was called for boarding. Raman Hrabarenka point shot produced a big rebound and Mike Hoeffel was there to slip it past Reiter and give Albany a 1-0 lead.
Later in the first, the Sound Tigers drew even with a power-play goal of their own. They had 1:52 of five-on-three time after a hooking call on Stefan Matteau and an elbowing call on Rod Pelley just eight seconds later. At the 12:46 mark of the first, Halmo found a loose puck near the top of the crease and tied the score.
That left more than 1:30 on the minor call to Pelley, but it was Albany who converted before the penalty time expired. A collision along the boards took a Sound Tigers defenseman out of the play and created a two-on-one for the Devils. Mike Sislo found Chris McKelvie in the slot, who scored his fifth of the year to give Albany the 2-1 lead.
In the second period, both teams had a pair of power-play opportunities, but neither was able to convert. The Sound Tigers and Devils each had seven shots on goal in the second period, while the Sound Tigers took an 18-13 shots on goal advantage back in to the dressing room. But at the end of two periods, the Devils still led by a score of 2-1.
That was as close as the Sound Tigers got, however, as the Devils scored four times in the third to pull away. First, Mattias Tedenby, down from the New Jersey Devils on a conditioning stint, raced into the Sound Tigers zone and ripped a wrist shot from the circle to beat Reiter. Tedendy's goal made it 3-1 at 4:05 of the third.
42 seconds later, Artem Demkov split the Sound Tigers defense and came in on a breakaway before he was pulled down from behind to earn a penalty shot. He deked to the forehand and went backhand past Reiter for his second goal of the season.
Tedenby picked up his second goal of the contest at 10:56, followed by a Joe Whitney goal just 13 seconds later. Both of those goals came on the power play after Reiter made initial stops, but the Sound Tigers were unable to clear the rebound Whitney's goal made it 6-1 and neither team scored again in the contest.
The Sound Tigers return to Webster Bank Arena Saturday night for Pink Rink Night. The Sound Tigers will be wearing specialty pink jerseys, which will be auctioned off at a silent auction during Saturday's game. Opening faceoff against the Providence Bruins will be at 7:00 p.m.
