Albany Devils News Release
ALBANY, NY - The Albany Devils scored three man-up goals, a penalty shot goal while on the power play and a shorthanded tally in their 6-1 win against the Bridgeport Sound Tigers Friday at Times Union Center. The win pushed the Devils winning streak to five games as they improve to 16-7-1-1.
Albany now has at least one power-play goal in 10 straight games. Mike Hoeffel, Mattias Tedenby and Joe Whitney each scored with the man advantage and Artem Demkov converted the penalty shot with a Bridgeport player in the box.
"I think it's confidence," said Head Coach Rick Kowalsky when asked about the power play's success. "We spend a lot of time on it, not that we haven't in the past. I think with this group -- some of these young kids -- we made a couple of adjustments in games and they're right on top of it. I think the other part of it is confidence and execution. We've been able to find guys that have been comfortable in the spots we put them in."
Hoeffel opened the scoring at 4:46 before Bridgeport's Mike Halmo tied the game at 12:46.
Albany grabbed the last lead it would need when Mike Sislo setup McKelvie for a shorthanded goal at 13:18, adding to the Devils special teams' success.
"Just paying attention to details and making sure we're real sharp," McKelvie said of Albany's special teams' units. "Our coaches do a good job of correcting mistakes and you have to realize the importance of a mistake for sure. If we can be on the plus side of special teams you're probably going to win."
From there Tedenby, who was loaned to Albany by New Jersey Thursday, scored the game's lone even-strength goal at 4:05 of the third.
After Demkov converted at 4:47, Tedenby scored again at 10:56, beating Bridgeport's Kenny Reiter five hole.
"I felt that I had good wheels today," Tedenby said of the first game of his conditioning stint. "My mindset was just to keep my shift short, so I could bring the speed all the time."
Whitney capped the scoring at 11:09 with his 10th goal of the season.
Tedenby led all scorers with two goals and an assist. McKelvie produced a goal and a helper and Raman Hrabarenka extended his point streak to five games with two assists.
In goal, Keith Kinkaid made 23 saves for his fourth straight win. Coming off a shutout at Bridgeport Tuesday, the Devils netminder had his shutout streak ended after 110 minutes and 58 seconds.
Albany and Bridgeport both unloaded 24 shots. Albany finished 4-7 on the power play and 6-7 on the penalty kill.
The Devils return to action Saturday with a 5 pm contest against the Hartford Wolf Pack.
