Pirates Dropped by Bruins in Shootout

Providence, RI - The Pirates were unable to hold onto a late lead as Alexander Fallstrom scored with just 29 seconds left in regulation to tie the game, then scored the lone shootout goal to give the Providence the 4-3 win in Providence on Friday. The shootout loss gives the Pirates 5 out of a possible 6 points against Providence this week.

The Pirates took an early lead, as Chris Brown buried a shot past Bruins starter Niklas Svedberg just 2:48 into the game. Brown's fifth of the year was assisted by Darian Dziurzynski, his second point in as many games. The Bruins tied the game at 1 as Andrew Cherniwchan, playing in his first AHL game, scored at 9:14 of the first, but the Pirates struck back just 4 minutes later. After a penalty on Seth Griffith, Daine Todd, playing forward for the first time since college, scored in his second straight game at 13:41 of the first. Andy Miele and Brandon Gormley assisted on Todd's second professional goal, and the Pirates took a 2-1 lead into the first intermission

After a slight delay to start the second period, the Bruins tied the game. David Warsofsky scored his third goal of the year and the only goal of the second at 8:20 to knot the game at two.

The Pirates would take the lead halfway through the overtime, as Keven Veilleux scored his first goal as a Pirate at 9:12 of the third. Gormley picked up his second assist of the night while Brendan Shinnimin tallied his first assist. Providence pulled Svedberg for an extra attacker with just under a minute left and it paid off, as Alexander Fallstrom scored with 29 seconds left in regulation to tie the game.

After a scoreless overtime, the Pirates and Bruins went to the shootout for the second straight game, with Louis Domingue making his AHL shootout debut. However, Svedberg stopped all 5 Pirates shooters while Alexander Fallstrom scored the lone goal for the Bruins in the second round to give them the come from behind victory.

The Pirates earned a point in the shootout loss, giving them 5 out of a possible 6 points against Providence this week. With the shootout loss, the Pirates drop to 2-4 in shootouts this season, and 3-5 in extra time. The Pirates drop to 9-9-1-4 on the year, while Louis Domingue suffers his first ever shootout loss and loses his streak of 3 straight wins against the Bruins to open his AHL career.

The Pirates return home tomorrow when they face the Worcester Sharks at the Androscoggin Bank. Puck drops at 7 PM for the annual Teddy Bear Toss and First Responder Night presented by Central Maine Medical Center. Bring a teddy bear to the game and throw it on the ice after the Pirates first goal of the night - all of the bears will be donated to Lewiston/Auburn first responders for use in crisis situations. Also, Pirates fans who bring a canned or non-perishable food item to the game will receive a pair of tickets to an upcoming January Pirates game.
