This will be the first Open Cup meeting between D.C. United and New York City FC. Since NYCFC joined MLS as an expansion team in 2015, United have a 4-5-2 record in MLS Regular Season play. The two teams have already met twice this year with the sides battling to a 0-0 draw at Yankee Stadium on March 10 and the Black-and-Red falling to New York 2-0 at Audi Field on April 21.
The Black-and-Red have won the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup three times in club history. They first captured the trophy in the inaugural MLS Season in 1996 after beating the Rochester Rhinos 3-0. In 2008, D.C. United hoisted the domestic trophy once again when they beat the Charleston Battery 2-1. The Black-and-Red then lifted the 100th edition of the trophy in 2013 after a 1-0 win against Real Salt Lake.
