Houston Dynamo FC News Release
HOUSTON - The Houston Dynamo will host Minnesota United FC at 6 p.m. CDT on Tuesday, June 18 at BBVA Stadium in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Round of 16. The matchup was determined in a random draw conducted by U.S. Soccer this morning.
The Dynamo are the defending Open Cup champions and are seeking to become the first repeat champion in the annual competition since Seattle Sounders FC won three consecutive titles from 2009-11. Houston defeated the Philadelphia Union 3-0 on Sept. 26 2018 at BBVA Stadium to claim the Open Cup title for the first time in club history.
All Dynamo Season Ticket Members will receive tickets to the match as part of their membership, and General Admission seats will available starting at $7 beginning Saturday morning. The match will be streamed live on ESPN +.
The Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup is a single-elimination tournament to determine the champion of American soccer. Teams from every level of soccer are included, from local amateur and semi-pro sides up to Major League Soccer. Each MLS club received a bye until the fourth round of the tournament. Founded in 1914, the Open Cup is the oldest national soccer competition in the United States and the second-oldest team championship in American sports. The 2019 tournament is the 106th edition of the competition.
Houston advanced to the Round of 16 for the fifth consecutive year with a 3-2 victory over Austin Bold FC on Tuesday night. Goals from forward Ronaldo Peña and midfielders MatÃas Vera and Tomás MartÃnez were enough to withstand a second-half push from Austin. The Dynamo are 18-11-1 all-time in the tournament, with the one draw going to penalty kicks in 2008.
This is the second consecutive year that Houston will host Minnesota in the Round of 16 after the Dynamo defeated the Loons 1-0 in 2018.
