Cyclones tickled pink in 6-2 win Friday night
December 14, 2007 - ECHL (ECHL)
Cincinnati Cyclones News Release
CINCINNATI - The Cincinnati Cyclones used a pair of three goal periods and two goal efforts from Matt Syroczynski and Mathieu Aubin to secure a 6-2 win over Johnstown on Friday night. It was âPink In The Rink' night at U.S. Bank Arena.
The Cyclones wore pink jerseys and played on pink ice-but there was nothing soft about the performance. Cincinnati killed six Johnstown power plays and utilized a three assist night from center Barret Ehgoetz to secure the twelfth win in the last 16 games.
The Cyclones jumped out to a 3-0 first period lead, as Billy Irish-Baker netted his fourth goal exactly one minute into the frame. Rookie Tyler Howells added the assist on the score. The lead opened up to 2-0, when Matt Syroczynski picked up his sixth goal of the season with a rising shot that beat Andrew Penner over his shoulder. Jean-Michel Daoust and Barret Ehgoetz added the assists. Then, with 11.5 seconds to play in the first, Mathieu Aubin beat Penner through a screen, his tenth goal of the season, as Conrad Martin added the helper. It was the twelfth time this season that Cincinnati scored at least three goals in a period.
The second period saw Johnstown net a pair of power play goals to narrow the gap to 3-2. Andrew Martens snapped off his third goal of the season with a blast from just inside the blueline at 4:22. The Chiefs got their second man-advantage tally of the frame from Brandon Straub at 10:52-his first professional goal.
The Cyclones netted three third period goals to close out the evening. Jean-Michel Daoust (14), Syroczynski (2nd/7) and Aubin (2nd/11) picked up the goals.
The game's off-ice officials were all women, a first in professional hockey history. The pink jerseys were auctioned off for the Patty Brisben Foundation, for women's health issues.
The Cyclones are 16-5-2, second in the North Division of the American Conference. Johnstown drops to 10-12-1. The Cyclones have their best 23-game record in team history, a full four and a half games (12-10-1) better than the 2002-03 edition of the club which advanced to the National Conference finals before being eliminated by Atlantic City, the eventual Kelly Cup champions.
With the victory, the Cyclones run their streak of games without a regulation time loss to seven games (6-0-1), which equals the season long. That initial stretch of seven games saw the club go 6-0-1 and a pair of losses Thanksgiving weekend to Dayton ended the streak. The current stretch began after that weekend. Cincinnati is now 12-2-2 in the last 16 games (since November 7).
Tickets for all Cyclones games can be purchased at the U.S. Bank Arena box office, all Ticketmaster outlets including select Kroger stores, charge by phone at 513-562-4949 or online at ticketmaster.com.
