Charlotte Checkers News Release

Augusta, GA. - The Charlotte Checkers battled the Augusta Lynx for the second time this season and lost by a score of 3-2 splitting the season series with one victory for each team.

In the first period, the Checkers got off to a great start when Chris Capraro scored 20 seconds into the period after he beat Lynx goaltender, Bobby Goepfert with a shot that sneaked in low on the blocker side. There was no scoring after that in the period but there were plenty of fights as several Checkers and Lynx players squared off in a heated finale to the period.

After twenty minutes, the Lynx would tie the contest up on the power play. Checkers netminder, Mike Ayers made several incredible saves but couldn't hang on to a rebound that found its way to stick of Louis Goulet who banged it past several bodies and into the Checkers net at 11:56. Charlotte wouldn't allow the game to be tied for long after Nathan Gillies fed Jordan Owens who stationed himself near the blue paint and redirected the pass behind Goepfert at 15:03 giving the Checkers a one goal lead for the second time.

In the final period, another power play goal for the Lynx would give them their first lead and it would end up being the winning tally. This time it was John Laliberte who buried his point blank chance on Ayers at 13:07. Charlotte would be unable to comeback down a goal and the Lynx skated away with a 3-2 victory.

Notes: Ayers turned aside 38 of 41 shots while Goepfert stopped 22 of 24...Charlotte allowed two power play goals on seven attempts but went scoreless during their four chances...
