Wheeling Nailers News Release

WHEELING, WV - It took 13 goals, 78 shots, 65 minutes and eight rounds of a shootout for the Cincinnati Cyclones to edge the Wheeling Nailers 7-6 Friday night at WesBanco Arena. Wheeling led the game five separate times while Justin Chwedoruk and Matt Byrnes each recorded three-point nights for the Nailers only to see the Cyclones come back to tie the game in the final 1:09 of regulation.

The two teams battled in the first period alternating goals that led to a 2-2 tie after the first 20 minutes. Todd

Spencer scored his second goal of the season at 6:48 of the first period on the power play. His shot from the point seemed to have deflected off a body in front and past Maxime Daigneault. Vadim Slivchenko and Byrnes assisted on the goal.

Cincinnati answered with a power-play goal of their own at 15:02. Matt Syrocznski converted a short feed from Thomas Beauregard for his 27th goal of the season.

Just 2:47 later, on another power play, Wheeling regained the lead. Seamus Young's slapshot from the right point reached over the extended glove of Daigneault for his eighth of the year. The first even-strength goal of the evening was only 40 seconds later from Beauregard and David Desharnais. Desharnais finished with three assists to up his ECHL point lead to 85.

In the second period, Barrett Ehgoetz gave Cincinnati their only lead of the game 1:20 in. With Wheeling on a power play, a giveaway led to an Ehgoetz breakaway and his 17th goal of the season. Chwedoruk evened the score at 4-4 with 2:30 remaining in the second with assists to Byrnes and Aaron Clarke.

The teams alternated goals again the third period with the Nailers taking the lead with each tally. Clarke at 4:03 and Chwedoruk at 12:19 were separated by a Beauregard goal at 8:54 on the power play. He completed the hat trick at 14:31 to tie the game 5-5.

BJ Radovich appeared to grab the game winner on his goal with 4:19 remaining in regulation. Byrnes and Joe Guenther set him up for a shot from the right faceoff circle to put the Nailers ahead 6-5.

The Cyclones were able to tie the game with 1:09 left on the clock. Olivier Latendresse took control of the puck behind the goal and circled out in front before beating Curtis Darling to force overtime.

After a scoreless five minutes, fittingly the game was decided in a shootout. Guenther scored as the first shooter and Beauregard tied it up as the second shooter for the Cyclones. After the goaltenders prevailed in the next four rounds Chwedoruk put the Nailers up with his goal. James Sixsmith beat Darling to force an eighth round. Byrnes was stopped just before T.J. McElroy netted the game winner.

The Cyclones and Nailers will rematch in Wheeling's next home game on March 22. The first 2,500 fans will receive Moondog bobbleheads courtesy of Generations, Convenient Food Marts and Shirts & More.
