Cyclones Rally Six Times For 7-6 Shootout Win

Cincinnati Cyclones News Release

WHEELING, West Virginia - The Cincinnati Cyclones came from behind six times Friday night to claim a 7-6 shootout win over the Wheeling Nailers. Thomas Beauregard netted a hat trick in leading the Cyclones to their 47th win of the season. Cincinnati can clinch its first-ever North Division title Saturday night-if Elmira loses in regulation time at Johnstown.

The teams each scored a pair of goals in the opening period. Wheeling opened up at 6:48 when Todd Spencer collected his second score on the power ply. The Cyclones evened the scores at 15:04 on the power play when Matt Syroczynski netted his 27th score from Thomas Beauregard and David Desharnais. A power play goal from Seamus Young at 17:49-his eighth gave Wheeling the lead again. Forty seconds later, at 18:29, Beauregard fired home his 28th of the campaign from David Desharnais-in the slot, a one-timer from a faceoff. Cincinnati held the upper hand in shots in the frame, 17-8.

In the second period, Barret Ehgoetz stole a puck at the Wheeling blueline and broke in uncontested and beat Curtis Darling for the score. For Ehgoetz, it was his 17th goal of the season and third shorthanded. Before the frame could end, at 17:30, Justin Chwedoruk picked up 15th goal of the season on a rebound to tie the scores at 3-3. Cincinnati again won the shots on goal battle, 13-10.

In the third period, each team scored three goals. Cincinnati got a pair of goals from Beauregard, his 29th and 30th of the season and Olivier Latendresse scored with 1:09 left, his third of the season, to force the extra sessions.

In the shootout, Beauregard, James Sixsmith and T.J. McElroy netted the scores. McElroy's came in the eighth round and was the game-ender.

Neither team scored in the shootout and Cincinnati outshot Wheeling, 5-2, in the extra frame. For the game the Cyclones outshot the Nailers, 49-29. Cincinnati was three for five on the power play, while Wheeling was two for four.

Max Daigneault stopped 23 shots in regulation time and overtime and turned aside six of the eight in the shootout to register his tenth win of the year.

Cincinnati reduced its ‘magic number' to clinching the North Division title to two over Elmira. The Cyclones have never won a division title in the ECHL. The IHL Cyclones captured just one division title (1995-96). Should Elmira win its game Saturday night or force overtime-the Cyclones can clinch with a win Sunday at Dayton.

The Cincinnati Cyclones are 37 games above .500, with a 47-10-3 record and sole possession of first place in the North Division-22 points ahead of second place Elmira. The win gives Cincinnati a 31-4-1 record since December 15. Wheeling is 17-37-7. The 47 wins are the most ever by the club.

The Cyclones are next in action Sunday afternoon (March 16) at Dayton for a 5pm tilt. The game will be carried on 96 Rock.
