Bombers Hang Tough but Fall to Devils, 2-0

March 14, 2008 - ECHL (ECHL)
Dayton Bombers News Release

Dayton, OH- Showing off their special St. Patrick's green uniforms, the defending American Conference Champion Dayton Bombers would utilize outstanding goaltending and offense to battle division rival Trenton Devils, but were unable to overcome two quick Trenton goals in the third falling to the Devils 2-0 in front of 5,954 at the Nutter Center on Friday night.

Picking up where they left off more than a month prior, Trenton and Dayton flew out of the gates to begin the game. Goaltending, especially that of Bombers netminder Rejean Beauchemin, would prove key as Trenton notched a quick eight shots on Beauchemin in the first few minutes. Dayton's Masahito Nishiwaki was robbed of a corner-picker by the glove of Trenton goalie Jason Smith, thus opening several quality scoring chances for the Bombers as time wore on. Despite the chances for each team, the game remained scoreless after twenty minutes, with the Devils leading in shots 16-8.

After getting an extended rest due to a minor ice glitch during the intermission, both teams utilized that extra energy by carrying a very high tempo to start the second period. Just as in the first, goaltending proved to be the backbone for each team throughout the period, including Trenton's killing of a Bombers two-man advantage. The Devils managed 12 shots on Beauchemin, while the Bombers posted 7 on Smith. Both teams completed forty minutes of hockey still scoreless.

It became a true "barnburner" in the first minutes of the third period, with both teams getting quality scoring chances on both ends of the ice. The game took a sudden turn at the 7:43 mark, as a miscue behind the Bombers net resulted in a quick Trenton goal by Andrew Leach for the eventual game-winner. In what shaped up to be the tying goal, the Bombers hit the post for the second time in the game right before the Devils jumped to a two-goal lead courtesy of Jason Paige at the 17:48 mark. Despite out shooting Trenton in the third, Dayton would remain scoreless in the hard-fought effort. Final Shots favored the Devils 37-25.

Dayton's record now stands at 26-24-5-5 for 62 points holding sole possession of fifth place and the final playoff spot.

Both teams return to the Nutter Center ice on Saturday for a rematch at 7pm. Tickets are on sale at the Nutter Center box office or by calling 775-4747. Saturday's game features an appearance by the Bud Girls and an exciting live post game St. Patrick's jersey auction immediately following the game on the Verizon Flight Deck. Fans can also tune into the Bombers broadcast starting at 6:45pm on b2 Networks at echl.com, daytonbombers.com and b2livetv.com with JT Szabo on the call.
