Trenton Devils News Release
DAYTON, OH (March 14, 2008) - Jason Smith continued his outstanding performance in goal by recording his second straight shutout in Ohio, leading the Trenton Devils to a 2-0 victory of the Dayton Bombers. Andrew Leach broke a scoreless tie in the middle of the third period, and Jason Paige added a big insurance goal for Trenton.
Smith stopped 25 shots in his bid for perfection including five from Matt Beaudoin, who is tied for seventh in the ECHL with 64 points. Smith extends his shutout streak to 136:16, dating back to a third period tally by Johnstown on Sunday.
After two scoreless periods, Andrew Leach would untangle the scoreless knot and give Trenton a 1-0 edge. Leach took the puck on a dump from Matt Cohen and raced to the side of the net to beat out Rejean Beauchemin. Beauchemin was out of position, attempting to pick up the puck himself behind the goal, allowing Leach to wrap the puck in from the right side.
Jason Paige made it 2-0 with an important insurance goal 17:48 into the third. After Trenton went scoreless on its fifth power play-they were 0-for-6 on the night-Paige hammered home a rebound from an Evan Shaw shot.
All that remained was for the Devils to give Smith his second straight shutout, his second of his career. Tonight's game marks the first time Trenton has held opponents scoreless in back-to-back contests.
The Trenton Devils bid good-bye to Ohio with one last tilt against the Bombers tomorrow, March 15 at 7:00pm. Trenton trails Dayton for the fifth and final playoff spot in the North Division, but plays the Bombers two more times.
