Cincinnati Cyclones News Release
CINCINNATI, Ohio - The Cincinnati Cyclones got timely goaltending from Dov Grumet-Morris, who stopped 37 shots, and forward Mike Wirll, who scored in both regulation time and in the shootout to claim a 3-2 shootout win over the Dayton Bombers Friday night. It was Cincinnati's first home game in three weeks and sent a Faith Night crowd home happy.
The Cyclones opened the scoring at 16:00 of the first period, when Barret Ehgoetz knocked in his 14th goal of the season from next to the right goal post. It was Ehgoetz's fourth consecutive game with a goal and gives him five tallies over that span. The power play goal was assisted by Travis Lisabeth and Matt Macdonald. Cincinnati cashed in on one-of-four power plays in the opening frame and out shot Dayton, 16-6.
Dayton knotted the game at 1-1, when Yannick Tifu buried his 23rd goal of the season at 6:25 on the power play. The Bombers were beneficiaries of seven power play chances in the middle period and capitalized on one of three five-on-three situations to tie the game. Dayton out shot Cincinnati, 20-6, in the stanza.
In the third period, Wirll netted his league-leading 38th goal of the season on the power play from Greg Gallagher and Matt Macdonald to give Cincinnati a 2-1 edge. Scott Ford's power play goal at 16:52 tied the game at 2-2 and sent it to overtime.
In the extra frame, neither team scored and the contest went to shootout. Wirll and Matt Rogers scored for the Cyclones and Matt Herneisen had the tally for Dayton. The triumph was Cincinnati's third in its last four games.
The Cyclones are now 31-22-2-2, leaders of the North Division lead by three points over Dayton and Trenton. Dayton is 29-20-0-5 on the season. Cincinnati is at Johnstown on Saturday (March 10) at 7pm. The Cyclones return to U.S. Bank Arena on Wednesday, March 14 at 7:30pm.
