Johnstown, PA (March 9, 2007) - The Johnstown Chiefs defeated the Reading Royals by the score of 5-2 at the Cambria County War Memorial on Friday.
Wheeling got on the board with a power-play goal at 7:32 of the first period when Jon Smyth tipped a shot from Curtiss Patrick past Morgan Cey. Johnstown would answer back 34 seconds later when Geoff Waugh took a pass from Grant Jacobsen and fired a shot from a sharp angle past Wheeling's Andrew Penner at 8:06 of the first period. Jacobsen would give Johnstown a 2-1 lead at 12:47 of the first period, when he broke in shorthanded over the Wheeling blueline, split the defense, made a move to his backhand and deposited the puck behind Penner.
Jacobsen would add his second of the game at 19:55 of the second period, picking up the pass from Jean Desrocher and beating Penner to the glove side, giving the Chiefs a 3-1 lead.
Ned Havern scored a power-play goal for Wheeling at 8:40 of the third period, but Dmitri Tarabrin gave the Chiefs a 4-2 lead just 27 seconds later, breaking in two-on-one with Jean Desrochers, firing a shot on Penner and then firing the rebound past him. Tarabrin would add his 15th goal of the year to give the Chiefs a 5-2 lead at 11:11 of the third period.
Morgan Cey made 20 saves on 22 shots, earning the win, and the Chiefs were 0-for-5 on the power play.
The Chiefs are home against the Cincinnati Cyclones tomorrow night at 7:00 p.m. and again on Sunday to against the Toledo Storm at 3:00 p.m. The first 1,000 fans through the gate tomorrow night will receive a Chiefs t-shirt courtesy of Uni1st!
