Dayton Bombers News Release
Dayton, OH - The Dayton Bombers earned a point with a 3-2 shootout loss to the Cincinnati Cyclones on Friday night in front of 3,371 fans at U.S. Bank Arena.
After having four days in between games and coming off of their 6-0 shutout over the Trenton Titans last Sunday, the Bombers went into Cincinnati on a mission to take over first place in the North Division.
Bombers starter and reigning ECHL Goalie of the Week Terry Denike (33 saves SOL) made his 7th straight start in net and saw 16 shots come his way in the opening period of play, as the Bombers were out shot by the Cyclones 16-6. Cincinnati grabbed the early lead when Barrett Ehgoetz found a bouncing puck right on his stick and put it in behind Denike on the power play at the 16:00 mark. The Bombers trailed 1-0 after the first 20 minutes of play.
The Bombers answered the Cyclones power play goal with one of their own to tie the game fairly early in the second period. Yannick Tifu knotted his 23rd goal of the season when he knocked home a rebound off the pads of Cyclones starter Dov Grumet-Morris (37 saves Win) at the 6:25 mark. From that point on the Bombers completely dominated the period, out shooting the Cyclones 20-6, but Grumet-Morris withstood a number of power play chances, including three two man advantages for the Bombers to keep the game tied at 1-1 heading into the third period.
As they were throughout the game, penalties became the story once again in the third period. Mike Wirll gave the Cyclones the lead by putting his ECHL leading 38th goal of the season under the cross bar of Denike's net with a perfect wrist shot from the right wing circle at the 8:48 mark on the power play. With less than four minutes left in regulation the Bombers received another power play and immediately following a timeout, they quieted the Cyclones crowd quickly. Mike Berry won a face off cleanly back to Greg Labenski who passed the puck across the top of the circles to Scott Ford (10) for the one timer that went right through the legs of Grumet-Morris to tie the game at 2-2 at the 16:52 mark. Following the tying goal, neither team would score another goal, and the Bombers and Cyclones headed to overtime for the third time in the series this season, but even overtime was not enough for both teams and on to the shootout they went.
Matt Herneisen would be the only Bomber to score in the shootout, but the Cyclones received two goals, one from Wirll and the game winner from Matt Rogers to give Cincinnati the extra point and a 3-2 shootout victory.
The Bombers are now 29-20-5 on the season and extend their streak to six games without a loss (5-0-1). They are now three points behind the Cyclones for first place in the North Division. The Bombers host the Wheeling Nailers tonight at the Nutter Center at 7:00 p.m.
The Bombers will be wearing special promotional jerseys featuring their new, alternate logo in honor of Wright Patt Air Force Base. These authentic, game-worn jerseys will be auctioned off immediately following the game on the Verizon Flight Deck by Bombers celebrity auctioneer, Jim Tietge. All fans are invited to participate in the auction, which will benefit the Fisher/Nightingale Houses. The Fisher/Nightingale Houses, located on Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, provide physical and emotional support to servicemen and servicewomen and offer an opportunity for military families to stay together and support each other when a loved one is undergoing medical treatment.
