Chesapeake Baysox News Release
Bowie, Md. - The Baysox (15-22) dropped their fourth straight game 7-3 as they were unable to match the offensive production of the Altoona Curve (14-22) Tuesday night. With the loss, the Baysox fall to seven games below .500, their worst record of the season.
Twice in the first five innings, the Baysox were tied or held a lead and twice the Curve took it right back in the top of the next inning as the team struggled to keep up with Altoona early in the game. Altoona took advantage of their eight hits to score seven runs, tallying three extra-base hits and batting 4-for-7 with runners in scoring position.
"With a lead, you expect to go out there and compete the next inning and hopefully throw up a zero and keep the game manageable and we gave up a three spot," said Manager Gary Kendall. "Then we threw up a couple tallies, but couldn't get a hold the next inning, which kind of deflates your ballclub - you like to get that hold and stay in the ballgame, but that didn't happen tonight."
The Baysox jumped out to an early lead in the bottom of the second inning against Altoona starter Tim Alderson. Shortstop Manny Machado drew a one out walk and moved to second base after a single to right field by designated hitter Robbie Widlansky. With catcher Caleb Joseph batting, a wild pitch allowed both runners to advance and Machado scored on a sacrifice fly by Joseph that gave the Baysox a 1-0 lead.
Altoona took the lead right back in the top of the third inning against Baysox right-handed starting pitcher Bobby Bundy. Miles Durham hit a lead off double to left field and Anthony Norman was then hit by a pitch. Elevys Gonzalez followed with a triple to right field that cleared the bases and Gonzalez came around to score on a ground out by Robbie Grossman that made the score 3-1.
Bowie tied the game in the bottom of the fourth inning. Center fielder LJ Hoes hit a lead off triple to center field and first baseman Brandon Waring followed with a double to left field that plated Hoes. With two outs, Joseph recorded his second RBI of the game when he plated Waring on a single to left field to make the score 3-3.
For the second time, the Curve took the lead right back in the top of the fifth inning. Durham hit a lead off single to second base and moved to second base on a ground out by Gonzalez. The two out damage began when Grossman singled to center field to score Durham before moving to second on the throw. Kelson Brown followed with a single to left field that plated Grossman. Tony Sanchez drew a walk and Matt Curry tripled to right field to clear the bases and make the score 7-3. Right-handed reliever Pat Egan replaced Bundy on the mound to finish the inning. All four of the Curve runs in the fifth inning came with two outs.
Bundy pitched four and two-thirds innings and allowed seven runs on six hits, while striking out two batters and walking one.
"He had three one-two-three innings, it was just the other two innings where he lost his command a little bit," said Pitching Coach Kennie Steenstra. Especially with two strikes, he had a chance to put some guys away, but he left some balls over the middle of the plate. It has been a struggle for him at times to make sure that he is repeating his delivery and repeating pitches. Tonight was one of those nights where he lost concentration on his delivery and went back into that pattern again."
Egan pitched one and one-third innings, not allowing a hit and recording two strikeouts. Right-handed pitcher Kyler Newby pitched a perfect seventh inning, striking out one batter. Right-handed reliever Sean Gleason pitched the eighth inning and allowed one hit while striking out one batter. Right-handed reliever Greg Burke pitched the ninth inning for the Baysox, allowing one hit and striking out all three batters.
Alderson pitched five innings and allowed three runs on six hits, while striking out three batters and walking one in the win for the Curve. Reliever Mike Colla picked up the save for the Curve, pitching three scoreless innings and striking out five batters.
Despite double-digit hits, the Baysox managed to score just three runs, as the offense stalled after scoring three runs in the first four innings.
"I was encouraged by the way we swung the bat; I thought we had some good passes, a lot of two out hits," said Manager Gary Kendall. "We couldn't get the big hits in a couple of innings with runners in scoring position where we could have made the game interesting down the stretch."
LHP Cole McCurry (0-6, 6.48) takes the mound for the Baysox tomorrow as they play the second game in their three game home series against the Altoona Curve. He will be opposed by LHP Nathan Baker (2-4, 5.35).
The Baysox are home through Thursday, May 17 for a home stand that includes Military Appreciation Night and Most Improved Student Night Wednesday during the game starting at 7:05 p.m. and its Most Improved Student Night again Thursday at 7:05 p.m.
