Altoona Curve News Release
BOWIE, Md. - The top four hitters in the Curve lineup combined for four hits and five runs batted in, Tim Alderson pitched five effective innings in his first start of the year, and Altoona snapped a six-game losing streak with a 7-3 win over the Bowie Baysox in the first of three at Bowie Tuesday night.
Alderson, into the rotation for the first time in two years, has reclaimed some of the velocity his fastball had mysteriously lost over the last two seasons and showed it on Tuesday. The big right-hander from Phoenix, Arizona consistently pitched in the low 90s through five frames, allowing just three Bowie runs on six hits in his longest outing of the year. The Baysox struck first on Tuesday, getting a run against Alderson in the bottom of the second before the Curve responded.
Altoona plated three runs in the top of the third, two coming home on Elevys Gonzalez's two-run triple to give the visitors the lead. After the Baysox drew even in the bottom half of the fourth, the Curve ran away with things in the top of the fifth.
Eight men batted for the Curve in the decisive inning with four coming home with two outs. Robbie Grossman batted in his second run of the contest, and Kelson Brown followed with his first. After Tony Sanchez walked to put runners on first and second, Matt Curry crushed a triple to right-center to bring home Sanchez and Brown and give the Curve a 7-3 lead.
Alderson polished off the fifth before handing the ball off to his bullpen. Shairon Martis tossed an inning of perfect relief with a strikeout, and Mike Colla followed with three scoreless frames of his own. Colla allowed four hits but struck out five in picking up his first save in his first appearance since moving to the bullpen.
The Curve can achieve their first series victory in a road set with a win in Wednesday's second game. First pitch between Altoona's Nathan Baker (2-4, 5.35) and Bowie's Cole McCurry (0-6, 6.48) is schedule for 7:05. Airtime on ESPN 1430 in Altoona and the Curve Radio Network is scheduled for 6:35.
