Omaha Storm Chasers News Release
Cubs batters crushed six home runs, including back-to-back shots by second baseman Addison Russell and first baseman Phillip Evans , while Storm Chasers third baseman Humberto Arteaga extended his hitting streak to nine in Iowa's 8-1 win over Omaha on Sunday afternoon at Werner Park.
The Storm Chasers struck first thanks to LF Elier Hernandez 's RBI single to right. The Cubs, however, burst back with eight unanswered tallies starting with solo blasts from LF Donnie Dewees and CF Ian Happ in the third and fourth frames, respectively. DH Johnny Field 's two-run roundtripper extended Iowa's lead to 4-1 in the fifth prior to Dewees' sacrifice fly in the sixth. Russell and Evans would then go deep consecutively in the seventh, before SS Dixon Machado capped the scoring with his solo big fly later in the frame.
Russell (2-5, R, HR, RBI), Happ (2-5, R, HR, RBI), Dewees (2-4, 2 R, HR, 2 RBI) and C Ian Rice (2-4) each posted two-hit efforts in the victory for Iowa. SS Erick Mejia , meanwhile, was the lone Omaha batter to collect two knocks. Arteaga extended his hit streak by leading off the third inning with a single and has hit .300 (12-40) along with six runs, one double, one triple and four RBI.
Cubs starter Matt Swarmer (5.0 IP, 5 H, R, ER, 2 BB, 6 K) earned the win, with relievers Xavier Cedeno (0.1 IP, 2 H), Matt Carasiti (1.2 IP, K) and Alberto Baldonado (2.0 IP, K) combining for the final four frames. Omaah reliever Zach Lovvorn (3.0 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 4 ER, BB, 4 K) suffered the defeat after Kyle Zimmer (2.0 IP, BB, K) tossed two hitless innings to start the contest.
Omaha and Iowa are set to wrap up their four-game series on Monday afternoon, with first pitch slated for 11:05am CT. RHP Heath Fillmyer (1-1, 7.20) is set to get the nod for the Storm Chasers, while the Cubs are expected to send RHP Colin Rea (3-0, 3.25) to the hill.
Tickets for that game and all remaining Storm Chasers home contests can be purchased online at www.omahastormchasers.com, or by calling the Werner Park Ticket Office from noon until 6:00 p.m. Monday through Friday at (402) 738-5100.
