Kane County Cougars News Release
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - Thanks to dominant pitching by Sugar Ray Marimon and Chas Byrne, the Kane County Cougars made franchise history on Wednesday night against the Cedar Rapids Kernels at Veterans Memorial Stadium. The two right-handers combined for a nine-inning no-hitter, leading the Cougars to a 2-0 victory and the seventh no-hitter in team history.
Marimon (3-2) logged 7 2/3 terrific innings to notch the win. He worked four straight perfect innings at one point and retired 17 in a row. He walked the lead-off hitter in the second and third innings and had one wild pitch in an otherwise perfect performance. With two outs in the bottom of the eighth, the Kernels' Ricky Alvarez reached on a throwing error by Angel Franco, and Marimon departed after throwing 101 pitches. Byrne came in and got Daniel Eichelberger to line out to right to end the frame, and then Byrne worked a 1-2-3 ninth inning for his second save to finish the masterpiece. This was the first Cougars no-hitter since 2008 and the team's first nine-inning no-hitter since 2003.
The Cougars gave Marimon all the support he needed in the first inning. Angel Franco led off the game with a triple against Brian Diemer (4-3) and then scored on a grounder by Alex Llanos to make it 1-0. Then in the fifth Franco singled home Travis Jones, who had singled, taken second on a wild pitch and gone to third on a sacrifice bunt. The Cougars have won six of their last eight games, and the victory Wednesday gave them their road series win of the season. The Kernels have lost nine straight games.
The Cougars (15-25) and Kernels (20-19) wrap up the three-game series Thursday afternoon at 12:05 CT. Leondy Perez (1-4, 2.79) is set to face Max Russell (3-2, 2.60). The game will be broadcast on WBIG 1280-AM and online via kccougars.com with pregame coverage starting at 11:50 a.m. CT.
