Kane County Cougars Pitchers Combine for No-Hitter

May 18, 2011 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Kane County Cougars News Release

GENEVA, IL - Kane County Cougars pitchers Sugar Ray Marimon and Chas Byrne combined on a tandem no-hitter in a 2-0 win over Cedar Rapids Kernels Wednesday evening in eastern Iowa. The no-hitter is the seventh in franchise history, the first nine-inning no-hitter in Cougars history since Bill Murphy accomplished the feat in 2003, and first franchise no-hitter since a 2008 seven-inning tandem no-no twirled by Craig Italiano and Branden Dewing as part of a doubleheader.

Marimon's only nemesis Wednesday night was his pitch count. The right-hander from Colombia started the game and was dominant throughout, throwing 101 pitches and going 7.2 innings without yielding a hit, fanning seven and walking two. A fielding error by Angel Franco with two outs in the eighth inning sent Cougars manager Vance Wilson to the mound and marked the end of Marimon's night. Byrne entered the game with a runner on first base and not only retired the next batter on the first pitch, but worked a flawless ninth frame to cap the historic evening.
