Hot Rods Win Protest Against West Michigan
May 18, 2011 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Bowling Green Hot Rods News Release
Bowling Green, KY - The Bowling Green Hot Rods, Class A affiliate of the Tampa Bay Rays, have won their protest regarding a disputed call from Tuesday's game against the West Michigan Whitecaps. Originally a 6-3 loss to open their three-game set, the Hot Rods will now resume the game with a 5-4 lead entering the top of the sixth inning when play resumes at 5:05 PM on Thursday.
The disputed call took place in the bottom of the fifth inning with the Hot Rods batting with one out and the bases loaded. With the Whitecaps leading 4-3, Steve Tinoco laced a line drive to right-center field. West Michigan center fielder Luis Castillo made a diving catch for the second out of the inning.
On the play, Derek Dietrich tagged up at third base and Todd Glaesmann tagged up at third; the runner at first base, Kevin Kiermaier did not tag up on the play. Once the ball was caught, Dietrich, Glaesmann, and Kiermaier all came across home plate before the throw from the outfield reached home. The Whitecaps then appealed to first base, claiming that Kiermaier did not tag up properly. The umpires ruled Kiermaier out for failing to retouch first base after the ball was caught.
Originally, the umpiring crew said none of the runs counted due to the catch and then the subsequent double play at first base. Hot Rods manager Brady Williams immediately filed a formal protest claiming the runs should score because they came before Kiermaier was recorded as the third out. The Midwest League ruled on Wednesday that the runs should have counted under rule 4.09 in the Official Rules of Baseball.
The teams will now resume the play from the point of the protest with the Hot Rods leading 5-4 heading into the top of the sixth inning. This means that Victor Mateo is no longer charged with a loss; he will be the winning pitcher if the Hot Rods maintain the lead through the completion of nine innings. Steve Tinoco will also be credited with two RBI on his sacrifice fly to put the Hot Rods into the lead. All other statistics after the sixth inning will be erased, including a solo home run from West Michigan's Nick Castellanos.
Thursday's game will begin at 5:05 PM. The regularly scheduled game for Thursday will follow the first game by 30 minutes and will also be played to a full nine-inning conclusion. Gates open at 4 PM and tickets for Thursday's game will be good for both the protested game and the original game. Thursday is Thrifty Thursday and Pink at the Park featuring the Hot Rods wearing pink jerseys to benefit the Mary Kay Foundation and Barren River Area Safe Space.
