Kane County combines to no-hit Kernels, 2-0

Cedar Rapids, IA- Kane County Cougar pitchers Sugar Ray Marimon and Chas Byrne combined to throw a no-hitter against the Kernels on Wednesday night, shutting out Cedar Rapids 2-0.

Sugar Ray Marimon (3-2) went 7.2 innings and allowed no runs on no hits while striking out seven and walking two. Marimon exited after Kernels designated hitter Ricky Alvarez reached on a throwing error by Kane County third baseman Angel Franco. Chas Byrne came on to retire the final four Kernels in order to finish the combined no-hitter. Byrne went 1.1 innings and picked up his second save while allowing no hits and striking out one.

Brian Diemer (4-3) took the loss on the mound for the Kernels. He started and went 5.2 innings. He allowed two runs on seven hits while striking out three and walking one. Manny Correa pitched 2.1 innings out of the bullpen, allowing no hits and striking out three. Caleb Graham pitched one innings and allowed no hits while striking out two.

The Kernels had four batters reach base in the ballgame. Brandon Decker walked to lead off the 2nd inning. Carlos Ramirez followed by reaching on a fielder's choice. Ramirez went to second base on a throwing error by Cougar second baseman Angel Franco. In the 3rd inning, Ricky Alvarez led off with a walk. Alvarez reached again in the 8th inning on the throwing error by Franco.

Kane County jumped on the Kernels from the outset. Angel Franco led off the game in the 1st inning with a triple down the left field line. He later scored on a RBI groundout by Alex Llanos to give Kane County a 1-0 lead.

The Cougars added a run in the 5th inning. Travis Jones singled to lead off the inning. He advanced to second base on a wild pitch, reached third on a sacrifice bunt, and scored on a RBI single by Franco. Kane County led 2-0 after five innings and held that lead into the end of the game. The Kernels have now lost nine games in a row.

The Kernels will conclude the brief three- game home stand with Kane County on Thursday at 12:05 p.m. Fans can enjoy a lunch combo special of a sandwich, chips or popcorn and soda or draft beer for just $7 thanks to Mix 96.5 FM.
