Bowling Green Hot Rods News Release
Bowling Green, KY - Infielder Robby Price singled three times, walked twice, drove in a run and scored one of his own on Wednesday night, but the Hot Rods couldn't take full advantage of his stupendous night with a 6-5 loss to West Michigan. The loss comes after both teams found out they have to re-start Tuesday's game in the sixth inning on Thursday due to a protest by the Hot Rods being upheld by the Midwest League. This means the Whitecaps have 1-0 series lead heading into Thursday's protested/suspended-game doubleheader.
Price's big day began with a first inning walk with the Hot Rods already trailing 2-0. He was one of two walks in the inning, but both runners were stranded in what became a common theme for the Hot Rods in the game.
After West Michigan added a run in the third inning, Price struck back as part of a two-run Hot Rods rally in the bottom of the frame. With a runner at second, Price singled home the first run, taking second on an errant throw to home plate. He scored himself when Derek Dietrich single to left-center to cut the deficit to 3-2.
West Michigan added a home run against starter Braulio Lara (L; 1-3) in the fourth, the final run they would get against the Hot Rods starter. Lara went five innings, gave up four runs (three earned) on six hits, one walk, and three strikeouts.
The Hot Rods added a run a run in the sixth inning, pulling within 4-3 on a sacrifice fly from Kevin Kiermaier. But a pair of errors led to two more unearned runs in the top of the seventh to give the Whitecaps a 6-3 advantage.
This is where the Hot Rods mounted a final comeback that ultimately fell short. In the seventh, Price singled to load the bases before Wunderlich lofted a sacrifice fly to left field to make it a 6-4 game. An inning later, Nick Schwaner doubled and then scored on consecutive groundouts by Kiermaier and Alejandro Torres to close the gap at 6-5.
Price began the ninth inning with a one-out single, taking third when Dietrich followed with a single to right field. Both runners were ultimately stranded again as Wunderlich and Todd Glaesmann struck out to end the game. The Hot Rods stranded a total of nine men and went just 3-for-12 with runners in scoring position.
The teams now wrap up their series on Thursday night beginning at 5:05 PM with the continuation of their protested/suspended game from Tuesday. That game will be played to its nine-inning conclusion. Thursday's regularly schedule game will also be played to nine innings and will start 30 minutes after the conclusion of game one. Thursday is a Thrifty Thursday featuring $2 food and drink specials. Thursday is also Pink at the Park Night with special fundraisers for the Mary Kay Foundation and Barren River Area Safe Space. The Hot Rods will wear pink jerseys, which will be auctioned off after the game with proceeds benefitting both Mary Kay Foundation and BRASS. For tickets, visit www.bghotrods.com.
